Construction of the new data center began in early summer 2010 and is now on the home stretch to fully complete. Upon the completion of the new center it will be branded as Sweden's most secure data center with a Class 3 certification created by the impenetrable caverns which the center is located inside.
The space is shared with, among other things one of the largest security companies in Sweden and their communication center that allows the space guard manned around the clock, all year long to meet one of the requirements needed to obtain safety class 3 stamp on the mountain area.
What puts icing on the cake is not less than that the center is environmentally friendly thanks to the extremely efficient mountain cooling that is naturally available in the center. This means that it only requires a few fans on the ground floor to send a cold stream to the center but also as they become obsolete a few winter months each year when the cold is so intense in mountain.
The center is located in a former transformer station that is virtually a brick house on 1200m≤ inside the bedrock that are protected by few inches thick armored doors and tens of meters thick rock walls. The reason for choosing this construction method was to prevent unwanted moisture inside the substation and keeping it cool, which also apply's today.
The transformer station was built 10 years after World War II and is thus built to prevent military forces to demolish the station, which created the huge security the space possesses.
The center will begin test runs in late September and it is completely ready in the turn of the year.
The center is located deep in the bedrock and thus creates a sought mountain safe environment for our customers' equipment.
Of course, the center is equipped with all the usual essential security is provided by which we mean fire and flood safe together with video and alarms monitored around the clock, year round.
The unusual thing about this center that make it stand out purely for safety is the fact that it is neighbor with one of the largest security company's in Sweden which makes the center guarded by security personnel around the clock, year round.
We will also make use out of guard escorts for visiting customers who obtains the access of, or the guards who are stationed there at the time of the visit. When the customer has reached the hall is access to a personal pass which besides giving access into the hall also automatically unlocks the cabinet or the customer rents. In this way we avoid the hassles that can create keys for all involved and also improves security.
Our first thought when we chose to build a new center was that it must be environmentally friendly. In today's society, it is important for both us and our customers to be able to contribute to a better environment.
This, we are creating through the following three points;
The PUE-Value is at the record low 1.02!
To achieve the goal of creating an eco-friendly center we have chosen to take advantage of the natural cooling that creates of the bedrock. The cold reaches all levels of the mountain area by fans on the ground floor that sends the cold air through vents to the different levels of the mountain space. To exploit this cold in the best possible way, we will create glass sections, with two cabinet lines in each section. This then creates a negative pressure when the cold comes up under the cabinets and thanks to the glazed approach it also creats a gauge that push out the warm air and cool the cabinet in a very efficient manner.
This means that we do not have the classical method to generate the energy needed for the equipment belonging to the cooling system. Instead, the only energy needed is the energy to get a few fans runing that are not used during the coldest winter months when the cold of the mountain is cold enough to cool the center.
The mountain space we build the center in is a former transformer station for the whole of Nacka and V‰rmdˆ. We have used this to our advantage and created a high voltage at 3Mw, which is divided into three low voltage of 1Mw each. As a result, we not only have the resources to expand our center in the future, but we currently have two extra grid as backup.
Beyond that, of course, the rock space is equipped with redundant UPS and diesel generator.
To match the demands of today's operators, we have chosen to draw two separate 10GE fiber links from various sources, Stokab and Skanova, to create a good redundancy. These are connected to a Cisco 7600 in the center, which in turn is connected to two seperate core routers. Our equipment has a capacity of up to 160Gbps per fiber link.
This assures our customers the highest possible availability and connectivity for their operations.
To create a center that is both environmentally friendly and rock solid, it's hard to find a position which is logistically well placed. However, we have done as it is situated on the edge of Nacka which is a 5 minute drive from Stockholm City.
Our engineers are located in a NOC-center with a five-minute walk from the data center.
The new green data center is expected to be fully operated in the end of the year but we have already secretly opened for our customers so they have time to become warm in the clothes for what's to come.
